Hi,

I`m after some up to date information regarding John Young. Whilst discussing Harrison Schmitt in a different thread.. I realised ..I have not had a reply to an autograph request that I sent off to John Young.

I sent the letter off two months ago.. can anyone tell me how long you can expect to wait to hear from Mr Young.

I sent the letter to the address listed on this site under Astronaut addresses.

Can anyone help, anyone had a recent success ?

For future reference when writing to the address stated for John Young do you need to send postage? I understood that because he is still with NASA that you dont... any help with this one much appreciated. Thank you.

Regards,

Andrew

Andrew,
I sent an autograph request to John Young
around mid-September (same time I sent a
photo to Schmitt). Still no joy!! I even
congratulated him on his 40 years with NASA!
I'm still hoping to get the "recent"
signed photo that he sends out to everyone!
Best of luck to you, too!

After my experience with him at the AHOF induction ceremonies, I would probably say you won't get a response. I wouldn't waste the time or postage.

John Young won't sign in person (unless your initials are A.H. ). But he is fairly reliable through-the-mail - you just need to be patient. Young still holds active duties at JSC, so his response time depends in part on his schedule.

I met John Young during the AHOF weekend, as he was in front of me on line while checking into my hotel. Shook his hand, was very brief, and would not ask for an autograph in that situation. I later wrote to him at the JSC address, related the story, and received a wonderful signed photo. The moral of the story- don't pounce, be respectful, and be patient.

I got the recent business suit ISP from John Young in just over 3 months back in 2001. I have since tried for an autograph on an index card in Feb 2002 and received a polite letter back from his PA declining, that took 6 weeks. My last attempt has yielded no response at all and that's been out for 8 months. So either John Young has become more hit and miss autograph-wise, or he keeps a mailing list and will only send one per person per lifetime. I get the impression that Harrison Schmitt has adopted this policy as he signed an index card for me but returned my photo of him on the moon unsigned as he has already signed for me - boy am I sick about that one! But I do have a spare WSS ISP of Harrison Schmitt if someone would swap it for a ISP on the moon - any takers?
Cheers
Brian
PS - Has anyone got a response from any astronaut who has supposedly ceased signing, ie I sent Frank Borman a birthday card last year and he sent me a signed card with his initials embossed on, with 'Many thanks, Brian, Frank Borman' in his own hand.

Brian,

I know of a UK collector who had the ISP suit picture returned to him within 5 weeks.
I was trying to establish if I had written to the right address, or omitted postage.
I have never written to Mr.Young prior to the request I forwarded to him recently.
I will just hold on like Robert suggested in his reply.

I have heard that Dr Schmitt does maintain somehow a list of people he has signed for.,
I sent him a picture of the LRV with him in the background.. I will have to wait to see how it goes.
If I hear of anyone who can help with your request will let you know... difficult one that though!!!

I have seen people post several times over the past year or two about receiving Schmitt stuff back. Sometimes with remarkably quick response times.

I have had stuff out for over two years and no joy. I did send him a letter recently with my new address in case he still has those two things I sent him... I keep my fingers crossed and hope I see something back someday. I know one day I will come home and have the surprise of my life. I can't wait for that day.

I hope you see your stuff returned to you soon... Douglas.
I have posted to a thread started by someone else re Dr Schmitt.
Where did you post the stuff too.. I know he swopped address P.O.Box number- some time ago.
I used the address listed on this site I think that`s the one where the successes are reported from..

Anyone attend the 30 th anniversary functions and mention autographs....Robert ?

Actually the initials were really P.M. and it was FOR A.H. ;-)

For those who write to JY, be very patient. His response times can be very long and while he is supposedly a 1 per lifetime, he usually does answer most requests with his current portrait. And of course, will not sign items sent in.

And long times, Ive heard of 2 years or so. Then occasionally its 2 weeks.

I've always wondered how to approach an autograph request to John Young. Since he only signs his current portrait (I'm assuming he provides it), should you offer some compensation for the photo and postage with your initial request?

Thanks!
