Okay, here is a weird search for information that will appeal to the test aircraft nuts.

I just started my Painting IV class. I have an assignment to do a painting on a non-traditional surface. For example, painting a wave on a surfboard, painting a picture of Michael Jordan on a basketball backboard etc…

I was thinking it would be fun to paint a test plane or even a space ship on similar surface. Does anybody know if Inconel-X (The stuff they made X-15s out of) is available for a reasonable price in a 24”x30” format? I don’t know if the stuff costs as much as Plexiglas or Gold. If it costs much more than Plexiglas I will move on to the next substance. I thought of Titanium, but I understand it has weird properties when exposed to otherwise common elements like the chlorine in water.

Or, does anybody have other suggestions for aircraft made out of affordable and available substances like Aluminum? I was thinking along the lines of vintage Flying Wing, X-1, D-558-2 or anything cool…

I was just looking for some input on a potentially interesting project.

Doug,
I think I've seen on rare occasion Inconel surplus parts or scrap of the shuttle. If I remember right they were pretty big so if you ever see one you could paint on it.

Well, I just received my alternate material for my painting.

Flown Space Shuttle Payload Bay Liner.

Many thanks to the wonderful Ken Havekotte for coming up with the material.

This piece is easily large enough for a nice painting. It clocks in at over 24"x30", a fine size for a painting. It was last flown on STS-82/Discovery on the 2nd Hubble Space Telescope service mission.

I have not decided on the exact subject, but it will be related to OV-103 or the flight.

Very Cool!

Thanks again Ken.

P.S.

If somebody does find a piece of Inconel-X let me know just the same!
