Just saw the horrific scenes on the news of the atrocities in NY and Washington.

I'm sure all the collectors on the group from around the world, would like to offer our sincere sympathies to the victims, their families and the American people.

With our sorrow...Adam

Same with me, Adam. I already did so in other space related newsgroups. This is so terrifying, I am standing flabbergasted ... . I did not believe my eyes when I saw the news coverage on TV.

My thoughts and prayers to all Americans, especially to those in the NY and Washington areas. I sincerely hope that none of you and none of your families and/or friends have been involved with these terrible events.

To all my American friends,

Allow me to extend my most sincere symathies to the victims, their families, and the American people during this great tragedy. I am shocked, and could barely believe my eyes.

With deepest sorrow,
Andrew.

Is anyone aware of any CollectSpace regulars that either live or work in the Manhattan/DC area? I spoke to a friend of mine this morning who works in Manhattan. He said that after the first airplane hit, he like many others in his office were just looking out of their office window at the burning WTC tower when he witnessed the second plane strike the other tower .... as I spoke to him several hours after the incident, his voice was still shaken and he was obviously very emotional, and understandably so.
I hope that the American public will finally start to understand the necessity of a strong and cutting edge military! My heart goes out to all of those impacted in anyway by this travesty!!!

Well I guess I am one of the few who live here, Brooklyn.

My god, this is a day of infamy.

I was waiting for my friend on the corner for school when he ran up and told me
"did you see what just happened?!". I went home for a minute and grabbed a
radio. On my way to school down teh block, the black smoke began to fill the
sky. Breaking the news to my teachers and class left them in shock. After a
test, I quickly ran home. The sky was now gray, smoke stretching from Manhattan
south to the Atlantic.

First of all, the most significant. My brother-in-law, whom I am very close to,
works in the World Trade Center, for the Insurance Comp AON. Specifically?
Well, Tower Two, floor 99...99 out of 110.

Finnaly I get through to my sister in NJ. My god, he didnt go in today thanks
to a doctors appointment.

Geez. Unimaginable. What a lucky man he is. His friends and coworkers, well, I
hope the best...but.

Knowing my parents were in downtown Brooklyn today (specifically at the
courts), I figured they were ok. IT took each three hours to get home; and as
they said, the building they were in was evacuated.

Ive been watching the news all day now....only one channel is working (CBS) as
the others used the WTC's giant antenna to broadcast. The smoke turned the sky
all gray, and you could smell it as it came this direction.

I cannot take in such a thing. The grandest landmark of them all, the worlds
third talles buildings, are gone. They were not beautiful buildings, but the
skyline will neevr be the same.

And I try not to think about the 40,000 people who were in the WTC today. I
hope they survive, but surely that cant be so. This si the worst tragedy In my
lifetime, and one of the worst in world history. Who would have thought? Four
planes all hijacked? Flown into the Twin Towers? The Pentagon? Pennsylvania?!

Unbelieveable. Unimaginable. I am in awe of the events which have unfolded
ebfore me today.

Godspeed to all.

Hell hath no fury like an aroused America!

First of all thank you to all our friends from around the globe for their prayers & sympathy...we'll never forget.

To our enemies look toward what we did to Japan and Germany half a century ago. We will not forget or forgive. The countries that are cheering this atrocity overseas (in Palestine people are celebrating in the streets) God help you. As far as myself, and everyone I know agrees, green, glassy, and glow in the dark is what you deserve and I hope our leaders have the resolve to do what is necessary once these killers & their supporters have been conclusively pinpointed.

We are at war and our enemies will not go unfound. They WILL feel the full fury of an aroused democracy. To hell with them and we will soon send them there.

God bless America!!!

For liberty,
Wayne Edelman
PS
Even if your small flags can't be flown at half-staff, fly 'em anyway. Be proud to be an American...I am!

I'd like to add my sincerest thoughts to all the people in NYC & the US affected by today's crime against innocent civilians. I too have been glued to the TV all day, and i still cannot believe what i'm seeing. I was lucky enough to visit NYC last summer-and i've just spent the last hour looking at the pictures i took of Manhattan on that trip.
I still can't get the lump out of my throat.

Very best wishes from England.

Death is not sufficient enough a punishment for those guilty of today's atrocities. As they demonstrated by operating suicide missions, death means little importance to them.

The organizers of today's terrorist strike should be captured and tortured. I know our Constitution prevents cruel or unusual punishment, but I don't care. They should be subjected to years of pain and suffering, one day for every person they killed.

I switched on my television this afternoon just as the second plane crashed into the Trade Center Tower, and my TV has not been off since. I have felt sick to my stomach at the thought of all those innocent people on the planes as well as in and around the buildings that have been slaughtered today! And for what! The barbarians who have undertaken this atrocity should have no mercy, no mercy whatsoever!

We have had to put up with alot of terrorisim here in the UK over the past 30 years, but nothing ever like it on this scale. I cannot turn the TV off, because I keep on hoping that a report will come on to announce that it is not real!

I feel for all those thousands of people that have lost theirs lives today and for the thousands more who will be without their mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, sons and daughters from this day on.

I feel sick, I really do, and all I can do is wish all those in the USA who have been affected my deepest sympathies, and I also wish those responsible for it the worst and most tortureous death that can be given to them!

While I understand the emotion and feel my concurence with it grow by the hour as more details come in, I have to disagree with the sentiment of blind retribution. The United States remains a nation of laws and those laws permit the nation's astounding freedoms. Any abdication of those laws ultimately serves to undermine our freedoms. Certainly, the idea of nuking some area until it glows would serve only to kill another massive number of innocent people and lower this nation to the same level of the terrorists who commited this atrocity. Let's leave it to the various intelligence agencies to identify those specifically responsible for yesterday's acts and allow others trained for the task to handle the capture or other handling of those individuals.

I am reminded of "Return Of The Jedi" where people could be thrown in the pit of Sarlac (sp?). There people would be digested for a thousand years. Cool. But I would do that AFTER the disembowelment.

Is it me or am I just tired of seeing every single different angle of the planes going into the building? There's only so much negativity one can take. It was nice to wake up this morning and hear the sounds of "normalcy". Someone mowing the lawn. Garbage trucks making the rounds. Trains up and running. Yes, we must feel for and do what we can for those that live and mourn those who have died. But we must not let this cripple us.

Hawkman:

I too am tired of seeing the plane hit the WTC. (BTW, I'm at work and just heard that they've found amateur video of the first plane hitting the WTC. Be prepared for seeing that over and over.)

Last night, I turned to my wife and asked her how many times must we see these innocent people die. I'm not trying to be a smart aleck with that comment. But we've seen it enough already. It is turning from news coverage into tabloid news.

Why can't they show people who have and are helping others? Let those outside the affected areas and those across the world see those stories.

My two cents worth for now. Peace to all.

Jeff

I am so upset.

Only 6 months ago I stood at the bottom of the WTC and took photos of the magnificent building.

And now as I watch the tv from here in the u.k. i simply can't believe my eyes.

It's unreal that certain people can get so disillusioned by their crusade, religion or political views and kill so many people for their cause.

I hope they do find the people responsible for this tragedy and bring them to the justice that they deserve.

My sympathy from here in the UK.

My thanks to you all, all over the world for your kind thoughts. I live in New Jersey, less than 15 miles west of manhattan. You used to be able to see the towers from our town, now we see just smoke. The saddest day in my life. Very hard to explain to my four year old daughter what I can not understand myself.

Beware of revenge and blind vengence. I, too feel like lashing out but what makes us better than the terrorists is that we live by the rule of law.

Most of all we must unite. for in numbers lays strength. Clifford

I agree with Robert and Wayne. Those who are responsible for this should be made to pay for this with their lives, after they've been forced to meet the victims families. THEN let the courts have what's left.

As many of you may know, and for those that do not, CS contributor Steve Zarelli worked in the WTC. I and others, have been on the edge of our seats awaiting word of his status. I am thrilled to say Steve finally had a chance to contact some folks and give us the OK sign. He also posted a very poignant posting to the Astronauts list being an eyewitness. I daresay no one would be able to read it with a dry eye. I couldn't.

Best,

I was there in 1998 and went to the top of the towers. It's amazing that those huge buildings are just completely gone.

I watched with horror yesterday as my nation was brutally attacked by maniacs hell-bent on taking innocent lives in an act of public spectacle unprecedented in all of history. The mix of feelings roiling within me is beyond words.

I have a very close friend who works on one of the top floors of the WTC. He worked late the night before and his boss told him not to go into the office until 10:30am. Thank God he put in a few extra hours the night before! After a couple of tense hours trying to get a connection in NY, I confirmed he was okay.

While I was fortunate not to lose my friend, I know an unspeakable number of others have not been so lucky. My heart truly goes out to those people. It's likely most everybody in America knows someone who lives in New York and as the smoke clears, we'll find more and more are touched by this horrible tragedy in increasingly personal ways.

I live in Chicago, where the worst we encountered were evacuations, a tough reverse rush-hour and anxiety over finding out the fate of loved-ones. I can't even fathom what it's like for those who were actually in DC and New York.

I want to express my sincere gratitude to our friends in other countries for their support -- in particular those CS members who have taken the time to post messages of condolence on these boards. It means a lot to me as an American to see the rest of the world offering such an outpouring of kindness.

This has been a frightening and trying experience for everyone in the US, regardless of their geographic location. But rest assured, we will rise above it and I hope our leaders will strike back in an appropriate, decisive and undeniable manner.

Dear Colleagues,

We were all undoubtedly deeply upset by yesterday’s horrible act of terrorism on the innocent citizens of the United States of America. In viewing the suffering of thousands of people, the victims of this senseless attack, we once again became aware of the fragility and vulnerability of the balance of world democracy and freedom as well as the fact that we are an integral part of the society of all nations, states and continents of the world society. The tragedy that occurred in a number of places in the United States of America is not merely the tragedy of that country, but a tragedy of all peace-loving people of this planet. I’m convinced that I speak for everyone when I express my deepest sympathies to the victims and their families as well as to the entire American nation.

I have been struggling for the past 2 days to add a post to this thread. First of all, I am so deeply moved by all of our European friend's kind words. On Tuesday, I met my young daughter's school bus and had to tell her that "the big buildings" she visited recently in NYC were no longer there. That was the easy part. The hard part was the "why".

"What will we do now?" she asked. My very first thought was "Continue the cycle", although I more or less told her we would find those responsible and bring them to justice.

My heart of hearts is very sad for those families who have suffered. But I am also sad for the innocents who are about to suffer for the acts of deranged terrorists. Don't get me wrong. The bad guys deserve what bad guys get. But that won't stop the cycle of prejudice, hate, attack and retaliation.

Oh, I will certainly fly the flag and sing "God Bless America" in these times, but I will not feel any pride whatsoever if more innocent people are disintegrated without warning by a sudden hail of fire from the sky.

"Imagine all the people ..."

I have just finished watching our late night news here in the UK. I'm typing this message in tears. The news reported that five survivors have been rescued from the rubble of the World Trade Center, and that those five survivors are firemen. My husband is a fireman...... what more can I say....

On my way home from work tonight I did my usual thing -- turned on the AM radio to listen to the local talk show. Certainly it was no surprise what the topic of discussion was tonight. The events of the past few days have been on all of our minds. I would like to convey to you (to the best of my recollection) a conversation that took place between a caller and the host ...
CALLER: "I'm 39 years old .... your average everyday blue collar worker. I'm no dummy .... but I'm certainly not the smartest man in the world .... and I need some help. Today my 10 year old daughter came to me and asked me why? (after a 5-10 second pause, caller breaks down) ..... and I couldn't answer her ..... I didn't know what to say and I need some help!!"
In the studio, the host was crying ....
In my car, I was crying ....
the radio went to station break.

update from New Jersey-

No one here has been unaffected by this. Luckily my family and friends are all ok but I still know three who are unacounted for. Almost every one that I know is missing someone.

We live within 15 miles. On Wed. and Thurs. there was the smell of burnt rubber in the air. By last night the rain arrived and blew it away.

From our town we used to see the towers. Then just smoke, now nothing.

Words just can not discribe......

Thanks for all the kind thoughts and support. Please keep them coming, Clifford
