This is a hard one to vote on Wayne. I'd have to vote at least four times, probably five.I'd bet a million dollars though that I know who you voted for. <G> ------------------ Brian Peter astronautbrian@space.com http://members.tripod.com/~brian_space/index.html |

Dick Gordon. Yep. I just wish he had had the opportunity to command Apollo 18 as planned. The nicest guy I have ever written to...even wrote me back on his stationary answering my questions. A True Gentleman. |

Ditto Mark, Cernan's got my vote!!! I can remember as a kid, every time I wrote to him I received a reply, whether it was an autographed photo or a brief letter or photos from one of the missions, he was always courteous enough to reply. A class act! |

I have nothing but respect for all of our astronauts, though if pressed I would have to say that I am partial to Alan Bean. Hardworking, loyal, and dedicated - and to this day he is willing to take time to speak with those who have questions about his time on Apollo 12 with Pete and Richard. |

Have to admit, this one is incredibly difficult because I do have a world of respect for them all. Narrowing it down to ten would be difficult. Since we were asked to identify only one astronaut, however, I will add my own campaign for Ed White. |

I do beg to differ here-I wrote two letter to Capt. Bean asking about his time on Apollo 12, asking only for a brief paragraph two (actually I didn't specify other that brief but that's what I had in mind) Each time I received his pre-printed pink sheet telling his autograph prices and that he has better things to do than answer letters. I would rather have gotten no response at all. My vote would be with Gene Cernan in that group although if I had to pick a favorite of all I would pick Jerry Ross. The man holds six shuttle flights under his belt, several EVAs, he was the last man to perform an EVA before the challenger exploded and the first out the airlock door when shuttle flights resumes. Lets not forget the guys in the pumpkin suits when we make this vote. |

My vote goes to Gene Cernan. My brother is a technician for ABC News and was assigned to all of the shuttle launches throughout the 80's. In August, 1983 (I was 16) I had the opportunity to attend the first shuttle night launch. At that time Cernan was doing broadcasts for ABC. Late that evening I saw Cernan quickly running through the press site. Of course, I had to stop him for his autograph! Well, not even breaking his stride, he turned me down cold with a big "no!"--he said he had "important business to attend to". A little down in the dumps, I went on my way, but quickly turned around and saw him enter a nearby port-a-potty! Several minutes later I was at another area of the press site when Cernan tapped me on the shoulder....he actually tracked me down to sign an autograph for me! Excellent Story!!I have 3 favorite astronauts and Gene Cernan is without a doubt one of them. Story Musgrave and Jerry Ross are the others. Wally Schirra would be a very VERY close second. Cernan is a true gentleman and I would vote Cernan no questions asked.

My fault...I didn't realize 'till just now that I'd left Grissom off the list. I could only place 30 choices & had to pick & choose, but fully intended to include Gus.------------------ Happy trails, Wayne Edelman "Take sides! Always take sides! Darn good point. Please amend my choice to Grissom...... but for the intervetion of fate's hand he would have been first, he deserved to be first, he should have been first. I understand there is a parallel universe where Neil Armstrong was backup on A11 and whose autograph fethches $10 - such is the fickleness of fate.Joe |
