Russian officials Tuesday FINALLY sealed Mir's fate: A DEFINATE fiery date with death over the Pacific in February.
So...no "Survivor" from NBC....And, on Monday, NASA officials vetoed any ISS "Survivor" show; According to Spaceflightnow.com, however, Dennis Tito may be going to ISS; I cant belive that. Personally: Let the Russians do what they want...but leave NASA and the ISS alone--it is NOT a tourist destination....Our astronauts would CERTAINLY disapprove of it, Im sure. ------------------

Actually, Ben, you're jumping the gun...Russian engineers advised today that the deorbit of Mir was imminent if funding was not raised quickly. Now they must direct their recommendation to the government for approval. Even if Mir is brought back to Earth in February, Tito and NBC's survivor could still fly. Technically, Energia (the company which owns and operates Mir and provides the Soyuz flights for ISS) could sell the third seat on the ISS-destined Soyuz flights. Therefore, both Tito and NBC's winner could fly to ISS and NASA could do nothing (theoretically) to stop them. (It has also been reported that Tito has been training to fly in January -- so he could be a member of a Mir-closeout crew still to be announced.) - Robert |

As much as I would like to go into space, I would not want to interfere with the ISS. For the last few years Mir was becoming more and more commercial, so I would not have any resevations about going there. But the ISS is a full-on expermental station and I would feel heaps more out of place and in the way in the ISS. Oh, well, there goes my chance... |

Now if a private company wanted to build, maintain, and fully fund a "hotel" module for ISS I'm all for it. Then as long as the tourists stayed in their "suite" except for a short tour, I'd have to say "Godspeed!!".------------------

Why not build it seperate of the ISS? That way you can move about freely. Have a huge observation deck, and an observatory on-site. Take a orbital cruise on one of the hotel's cruise ships. Meet and mingle with the in-house astronauts who have since left the space program. Hmmm...sounds like a good idea to me. Lets pool our resources and start this up (wishing). |

I imagine that the Japanese will do that very thing as soon as there's a reasonably priced (under $100,000 per person) mode of transport to & from orbit. If you had flights in that price range, even with no on orbit habitation facilities (except for the transport ship itself) they would be sold out solid for a decade or more.
People already pay $65,000+ to attempt Everest, with dozens paying that every year. You wouldn't have to have the same level of fitness to fly in space as compared to trying Mt. Everest. The sad thing is that practical transport of that nature is decades away even with the X-prize.Lordy, even with the current 20 million that folks like Tito and James Cameron are willing to pay you'll have takers. Once Tito successfully (we hope & so does he!) flies, I think we'll see at least a dozen more sign up. The US alone has millions of multi-millionairs!! Too bad I ain't one of them. Oh well....I can dream.

Let MIR go.The place has a proud history, and a notorious history. Most importantly, every dollar the Russians spend on MIR, is another dollar that they can't put towards ISS. Then the US has to bail out Russia to make ends meet on their commitment to the ISS. (Anybody recall the two year delay on the Service Module!) Bringing the Russians into the ISS was a huge political mistake which allowed Russian Space Nationalist to blackmail the US taxpayers into paying for delays to the ISS. Granted the Russians have experience in long duration space flight that we could use, but honestly, the politics stink. Let MIR go, and bring the much delayed ISS on-line at long last. |

I agree. With our new techmology and international teamwork we should be up there longer than MIR in a possibly better enviroment which will be safer for the crew. Lets draw from MIR and leave glourious into the future
