Seeing the story on the Challenger wreckage court case, I was just curious as to the legal position for the non-Challenger scrap parts that turn up for sale (a few of which I have bought)Anybody have a clue? |

As long as the pieces were not lifted from space agency (Psst...wanna buy a slightly used Space Shuttle Main Engine?), then you should be okay. The important thing to remember is to always look for scrap tags or paperwork. First, this provides a proof of authenticity and can often lend clues to if/when the item flew . Secondly, it shows that NASA discarded the piece and therefore no longer claims ownership. You can even own material from the Challenger if the item was scrapped BEFORE the explosion.
