Hi. I am at a loss to understand how they number the shuttle missions. At first was it chronological? And now it's some kind of a code...? Please talk me down. Your help is much appreciated. A curious -

From "Relics of the Space Race", page 107:

In 1983, a new Shuttle mission numbering scheme was devised. Previously, missions had been numbered sequentially, 1 through 9. In the new designation, mission numbers were divided into three parts: fiscal year (4, 5, 6, etc.), launch site (1=KSC, 2=Vandenberg), and a sequence letter (A, B, C, etc.). Thus, STS-11 (STS-10 was cancelled) became STS 41-B. Following the Challenger disaster, mission designations returned to their original numeric sequencing.

Thanks. But I am still not certain. For example - STS 95. It was launched in 1998 in Florida. How do the numbers correspond? Thanks for your help. Jim Sigler

What Russ means is that since the Challenger explosion, the missions are numbered in order of intended flight. STS-95 was the 95th mission. Only problem now is that the International Space Station delays have got the missions out of order again, as they stick with the number assigned a mission when it's planned, even if it flys at a later date.

That's all correct guys, the rescheduling of missions, mostly due to ISS module delays ... brings the fact that STS-92 & STS-97 will be launched months after STS-106 ...
The 100th Shuttle mission is upcoming !
