On Nov. 29, 1961, USS Stormes recovered the chimpanzee Enos after his Mercury-Atlas 5 spaceflight. Does anybody of you know, which was the first harbour USS Stormes embarked after this recovery?

When did she embark her home harbour New York?

From what I can gather; the Stormes disembarked Enos and MA-5 in Bermuda; the destroyer's regular home port was Naval Base Norfolk, VA (not NY). As she often operated in the Caribbean, I surmise she put in at local US naval bases like Jacksonville or Key West on Florida's east coast.

Incidentally; the Stormes is still with us; she was decommissioned in 1970, sold to Iran in 1972 (then still under the Sha) and renamed Palang, but has been out of service since 1994.

I have never seen any clear photos of the recovery of Enos or spacecraft #9.

Lou, I have one photo that I believe came from a Stormes cruise book. It's a color shot of a Mercury spacecraft in the pivot crane.

Ed, yes, the first one is the one to which I referred. I have it in color.

Ed, sure could be a magazine scan. The provenance was not clear.

Thanks to both of you. The last time I saw Enos spacecraft was at The Museum of Life and Science Hillsboro N.C.

What is your opinion on this postmark? In my opinion, it says, N.Y. was the home harbour during Enos recovery.

I know when I was in the Navy in 1967 all mail went to a Fleet Post Office (FPO) in NY for all east coast based ships. Doesn't mean you were based or ported out of NY.

Thank you very much for this explanation. It helps me to improve my exhibit.

How do you call such stamps? Transit postmark?

It is/was called a "Fleet Post Office," FPO. There was also one in San Francisco for west coast based ships and stations.

All times are CT (US)
