I’m looking for the exact number of personnel who were in quarantine in the Lunar Receiving Laboratory along with the Apollo 11 crew members when they returned from the moon. A complete staff list with positions would be great, but I’ll settle for the total number of individuals present. I’m looking for the period during quarantine only.

Seems like an easy question but I must be looking in the wrong place.

I vaguely remember a news story that someone "accidentally on purpose" got exposed to the astronauts or the moon rocks and had to be put in quarantine until the crew members were released. If you find the exact figures, will they distinguish between the people who were supposed to be in quarantine and anyone who engineered it for their own reasons?

I seem to remember a similar story. I recall that a tech got lunar dust on his hand from a camera magazine and ended up in quarantine. I also believe that there was at least one additional "incident."

This is an interesting bit of trivia. Looking forward to some responses.

On a slightly different note, I do not recall any such recurrences during the Apollo 12 quarantine.

I think the person involved with the accidental contamination was Terry N. Slezak.

Yes, Terry Slezak was the name of the photographer who oversaw all photo documentation activities during the quarantine process. He is the one who first handled Magazine S, which had been dropped by Armstrong while on the lunar surface during the EVA. Slezak was the individual who got lunar dust on his hand while handling Magazine S within the LRL during the period of quarantine.

As per Terry Slezak's JSC oral history interview:
Now if you're wondering what this girl is doing in there, this is a girl from the rock lab.In the last two, three days of the quarantine, she poked a hole in a glove in the rock lab, so they put her in quarantine. The thing is, she had told a couple people beforehand that she was going to get into quarantine with us. We had to change the sleeping arrangements, and one of the guys lost his bedroom. The rest of us slept in kind of a dormitory. She later got as much mileage as possible from this, and she was on local and national television.

From A History of the Lunar Receiving Laboratory, an appendix to the "The Quarantine and Certification of Martian Samples" (National Academies, 2002):
December 2, 1969

During preliminary examination of the Apollo 12 samples a cut glove in the LRL vacuum chamber causes a “spill,” sending 11 exposed people to the Crew Reception Area, which is filled to overflowing, for the duration of quarantine. (Some personnel who also were exposed to the hypothetical spill evade quarantine by fleeing the area before guards charged with enforcing quarantine rules arrive.)

The oral history has this group photo.

I've seen that group photo before. My question is, are all members who were in quarantine represented in this photo? Again, a list of personnel and their positions would be great to have if at all possible.

We especially need to know who's hiding behind Aldrin!
