In the Apollo 15 MESA diagram below, compartments for food are labelled. I know the astronauts had an energy bar and drink inside their EMU helmet for use during the EVAs. So why is food stored outside the LM in the MESA — did they take it from here back into the LM?

Stowage was limited in the LM cabin so items that weren't needed immediately like food, PLSS batteries, PLSS LiOH, LM LiOH, clothing, etc were stored in the MESA. The crew would retrieve the hardware during EVAs and bring it back to the cabin. If the crew couldn't do the EVA, then they wouldn't be needing the items in the MESA.

All times are CT (US)
