During Rusty Schweickart's EVA on Apollo 9, I believe he was connected to the Lunar Module via a simple tether and the way he received oxygen was through the PLSS backpack he was wearing. Is this correct? Also, I have never seen a photograph of the tether line that kept Schweickart tied to the spacecraft. Has anyone seen a photo of the tether? |

The purpose of the EVA was to test the PLSS backpack operation during EVA, along with the suit and associated systems. It was also a test of procedures for astronaut transfer from the lunar module to command module and from top to front LM hatch. This is why the handrail was added to the LM. The tether hook can just be seen in this photo or here. And some more information on the tethers. |

I have been trying to find this out for a few years now, was the CM hatch open or closed during the EVA? |

If you mean the tunnel hatch, your question was already answered on this thread. On Apollo 9, the tunnel hardware (drogue, probe, hatch) was installed during the EVA preparations. The LM overhead hatch was closed. |

Yes, the tunnel hatch. Thanks. |
