The Mercury astronauts were invited to the Cape to watch an Atlas test launch. That vehicle exploded shortly after launch. I seem to recall that one of the astronauts had a very quick and brilliant comment; something to the affect of "I hope they get that fixed." Does anyone recall what the comment actually was? I am putting together a "60 Years of U.S. Space Exploration" presentation and thought that might be a humorous anecdote. |

I believe that it was Alan Shepard who, upon witnessing the Atlas explosion, commented "I'm glad they got that one out of the way; I sure hope they fix that!" Classical Al! |

I heard John Glenn say on the documentary "Moon Shot" that the astronauts looked at each other and he or someone else said something like, "That's the thing we are supposed to fly?" Glenn then added, "We had some discussions with the engineers after that." At least that is the way I recall it — have not watched "Moon Shot" in several years. |
