Apollo 17 16mm Magazine Q contains some onboard views of Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt in the lunar module between liftoff and docking. The images are very dark, but Cernan can be seen wearing his suit and helmet, but not his gloves. The views of Schmitt are even darker. It looks like Schmitt puts something about the size of a film magazine into a white bag.

At what point during the rendezvous was the footage taken? Was it during LOS? It would be interesting to try and match the footage to the transcripts.

I think the footage was taken after the docking while Ron had joined Jack and Geno to transfer material to the CM, stow things away ready for jettison and hoover up the dust and so on. Certainly the video shows a couple of different bags being waved around. I tried adjusting the brightness but it didn't reveal much extra.

You can also see that in one pan from right to left we seemingly move between two people, suggesting a third is holding the camera.

During the conversations recorded after LOS (which are only partially recorded in the TEC transcript but in more detail in the CM transcript) there are a few exchanges that are of interest.

One is at 7d20h12m10s, where Jack mentions that they need to vacuum the gloves. Ron replies by asking if the gloves are in the LEVA bag, whereupon Gene states that they are. So at this point then they aren't wearing gloves.

Two minutes later Gene says that "you ought to put that light on me" — the 16mm shows what looks like a torch light being shone around and it is obviously dark in there. They would have been beyond the terminator at this point.

In the early part of the exchanges Gene complains that his mouth nose and eyes are full of dust, but at 7d20h12m10s Jack says: "I'm going to keep my helmet on because this dust gives me pretty bad hay fever, Ron."

So, after docking they have removed their gloves, but Jack kept his helmet on to avoid aggravating his nostrils!

I had wondered about the gloves, because the suit wearing schedule had the CDR and LMP suited with helmet and gloves from liftoff to docking.

Thanks for the additional info. I will take a look at that CM transcript.

Cernan says, "My eyes, nose, and mouth are so full of dust" at 07/20:12:39 GET. Sounds like he is not wearing his helmet at that point. So perhaps the footage was taken sometime between the docking at 07/19:37:20 and that GET.

I have Jack's "helmet on" comment at 07/20:22:13 GET.

You're right about the time of Jack's comment - I copied and pasted the time from earlier in my post out of laziness but looks like I forgot to edit it to the correct time.

No problem. With your help, we have narrowed down the timing of that footage quite a bit.

The Apollo 17 LM onboard transcription ends on the lunar surface before liftoff.

All times are CT (US)
