What can be said about the second photo? Gene Kranz does not appear to have the same mission patch as in the original Apollo 13 picture. Same room? Anyone else there that was there in 1971? Got to love the pencil sharpener (first photo).

Nice retro reenactment, right down to the narrow ties! Yes, it does appear that Kranz has a NASA 'meatball' patch on his vest and not the Apollo 13 insignia. Also, it looks like the retired MOCR room they are in, comparing it to the 1970 (not '71) view.

And, in a lighthearted note, notice the figurine next to the coffee cup in front of Kranz in the second photo. That is a Japanese Maneki-neko cat figure, literally meaning 'beckoning cat' (most of the arms are battery operated to wave their left paw). It's a traditional symbol for bringing good luck - something which 13 and its crew could have used a lot of, I'm sure!

From theCHIVE:
The second photo is a reenactment photo taken by NASA's Damage Assessment Team after they cleared the last shuttle flight for reentry.

...as a form of geeky celebration, everybody dressed up as Gene Kranz, Apollo 13's famous Flight Director, to recreate the iconic image. Little did we know that Gene had caught wind of the proposed photo and liked the idea so much that he actually showed up! Gene was insightful and very funny. He stuck around to sign copies of the original photo and share little-known stories about the Apollo 13 mission. It was awesome.
