A post on the newsgroups got me interested in looking at the actual serial / construction numbers for the Gemini spacecraft.I looked at AFGAS but the numbers seem out of sequence at times. Other aspects of manned space programme numbering seem very logical and ordered, indicating block series or other variations (e.g. Titan launch vehicles, Apollo CMs, etc). Does anyone have some references or experience that explains why the Gemini spacecraft got those serial numbers, and what the decode - if any - is? |

It probably doesn't answer specifically what you are looking for, but some detail of the history of manufacture of the Gemini's can be found in Appendix D of the programme chronology. |

Thanks!Do you have a SP number / document ID for it? I think I have looked at it but need to be sure. |

Gemini Chronology SP-4002; Appendix 3 Table D.As I said, hope it helps. A trawl through the full chronology may well add further details. |

Still lists them as spacecraft 1, spacecraft 2, etc, rather than actual serial numbers. Thanks anyway! |

You might find what you want here. Also, if you Google Gemini spacecraft serial numbers it throws up a site which will list all the NASA Gemini reports. Good luck searching. I do know the frustration seeking an answer can cause, e.g. how did BP-1227 get lost. |

It seems as NASA did refer to them simply as Spacecraft 1, etc, in all the documentation I have seen but we know they had contractor / construction numbers assigned to them, too. It might take a letter to Boeing asking if their old McD records can help. Thanks again for the references. |

I just checked my copy of David Baker's History of Manned Space Flight, which has data tables for all the flights. No luck - he too refers to Spacecraft 1, etc. |
