The Saturn V launches were managed out of the firing rooms (1, 2, and 3) of the LCC at LC 39. Were some S-IB launches also performed from the LC 39 Launch Control Center, and if so, was it necessary to make changes to the firing room consoles at LC 39 to accommodate the S-IB vehicle (versus the Saturn V)? |

From what I understand, the Skylab and ASTP Saturn IB launches were run from Firing Room 3. I happen to have a couple of the control panels for the S-IB first stage that I am restoring (see the article here) and they are clearly marked as being S-IB. So yes, there were different control panels in use for these launches than the Saturn V.I'm also restoring an S-IB Networks panel, which monitored the electrical systems for the first stage of the Saturn IB. At my visit to the Saturn V Center at KSC in November, I happened to espy an S-IVB Networks panel. The panel layout was identical to the S-IB Networks panel, with a few switches missing. Here's a locator photo with the S-IVB Networks panel highlighted, and my S-IB Networks panel shown in the upper right. I believe the overall room layout was not appreciably different between Saturn V and Saturn IB launches. I imagine that there were fewer stations needed in the latter case, for example, since there was no S-II stage with the Saturn IB flight. |

Thanks much - this is helpful. I know firing room 3 was a backup room of sorts for the Saturn V checkout/launches (rooms 1 and 2 primary), so guess 3 served for the S-IB launches. The S-IB panels are very, very cool! Thanks for sharing them. Tim | |
