Having flown aerobatics at roll rates way in excess of this, it's minimal. Unexpected? That's probably the key to the expletive.

Agreed.

Pilots are aware that rates do not have to be high to be concerning. Watching a nose wander slowly during a high-AOA maneuver or at the end of a low excess speed cat shot will 'focus you'.

I think the key here is that they rehearsed it so many times in the sim and they knew the spectrum of nominal responses. To me Geno's remark really only indicated that things were far from normal. And not knowing the culprit for even a low-rate excursion off nominal at 240,000 miles from home: boy, that must get your undivided attention!
