In my research at the National Archives I've come across some fascinating stuff about the world tours of the Apollo 11 and 12 crews. I know that Apollo 17 did a tour, and obviously Apollo 13 didn't, but I can't seem to find much at first glance on Apollo 14 through 16. If anyone can help out with that specific question, I would be really grateful, and if anyone has any "color" to add on any of the tours as it relates to the political/foreign policy angle I would also be a very happy camper. |

Charlie Duke of Apollo 16 had some details about this during a chat at the hotel bar at the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation show in November. He was telling about a hunting trip in Africa after that mission, and I asked if this was during a NASA-sponsored world tour. I don't want to quote him directly/exactly, but he said that there wasn't a world tour for Apollo 16. |

There was a world tour for Apollo 13. William J. O'Donnell, a NASA HQ PAO (and my father-in-law) was on the trip. |

From Pocantico Hills School: When they finally reached land, President Nixon lent the astronauts his jet so they could take a world tour. In 34 days, they got to see 24 countries and 27 cities. |

When I lived in Europe as a kid, I remember the Apollo 14 astronauts being interviewed on a French TV program not too long after their mission. |

The Apollo 15 crew made a 10 day goodwill tour of Poland and Yugoslavia some time after the mission. I don't know any details. |

Here is a lead for your research. In the collection of NASA oral history interviews transcripts titled as "Before This Decade is Out", please read this chapter. During the Apollo missions, [secretary at the Office of Public Affairs Geneva B. Barnes] assisted in protocol activities at the Kennedy Space Center for four of the flights, including Apollo 11. |

Some snippets of information: the Apollo 14 crew was in Paris in June 1971; the Apollo 15 crew was in London in September 1971; don't know if you can call that a world tour, though. |

The yearly NASA reports 'Aeronautics and Astronautics' usually gave good information on these kind of activities. |

There is always the Queen's "Gotcha" on Neil Armstrong, as related in Paul Haney's foreword to our book "Into That Silent Sea." |

Is anyone aware of any resources out there that lists post-flight crew visits to cities and international destinations for Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions?Ideally I would like to see the information in chronological order for each crew... but anything is better than the nothing I have at the moment. Editor's note: Threads merged. |
