Help! I have hit a stumbling block in my TV camera research! I have trouble figuring out exactly when RCA got involved in designing the CSM B&W camera (for AS-204, Apollo 7 & 8). I know that in a 1963 monthly progress report (SID 62-300-14) NAA named RCA as the contractor, but in a memo entitled "Cancellation of Contract with NAA for Provision of a CSM TV Camera for Apollo" by JL Decker mention is made of both the CSM and LM cameras being designed by RCA. Can anyone offer a more precise account of RCA involvement? |

Sent an email to you with more detail, but it primarily goes to a division of block 1 and block 2, with Block 1 = RCA and Block 2 = Westinghouse.Initially the Block 1 was developed, with the plan to use the Westinghouse camera for both the CM and the surface. Then later the Block 1 camera came back into use, even though no Block 1 flew. From what I have examined, this was due to the RCA Block 1 camera being lighter and smaller than the Westinghouse "Block 2" camera (the lunar surface camera). So even though it was "cancelled" and moved into bonded storage, the Block 1 camera came back into use for Apollo 7 and 8, even though they used Block 2 CMs. There were also contract changes between contractors and subcontractors that made the progression even more murky.
