I'm aware of the cockpit photos of Glenn during MA-6. I've seen a couple of images taken in the Gemini cockpit during the missions. There are plenty of Apollo cockpit images.

Some questions:

  1. Were cockpit photos taken only during MA-6 in the Mercury series, or were there other cockpit photos DURING the mission?

  2. Did the sequence images start from liftoff, or was the camera started after the capsule was in orbit?

  3. Were there any similar images for the Gemini missions (not including images taken with the hand-held camera; looking for cockpit mounted cameras)?

  4. Similarly, any images during launch or only whilst in orbit?

  5. Any cockpit-mounted cameras for the Apollo launches (not including the mounted TV camera, or images from hand-held camera)?
URLs to images, data, diagrammes, etc, would be very much appreciated.

Some answers:
  1. Cockpit films (not photos) were taken during all manned Mercury missions (and even some unmanned ones).

  2. The camera was started just before launch.

  3. No. Unless you mean the film from the unmanned Gemini (GT-2, I think). It is on the Spacecraft Films DVD.

  4. See 3.

  5. No.

Ed,

Many thanks. Do you know if any of them are available online (apart from the few MA-6 shots) or are they only available on products like Mark's DVDs?

The films are not available online, I think. I could mail you some stills if you want...

I thought I have seen video from the ASTP flight shot during launch, but I don't know where it's available (I seem to recall Deke Slayton folding his arms across his chest to keep from interfering with Vance Brand's arms).

Oops, I see that you said not including the mounted TV camera... sorry.

There is a clip of this in the "For All Mankind" DVD.

Ed,

Thank you for the very kind offer, but it is not necessary. I am just researching what cockpit-mounted cameras were used (in relation to yet another "hoax" claim).

My research says that the Milliken DBM-7 was used to record instrument readings during the Mercury programme, and the DBM-8 used to film the astronaut.

It appears that the DBM-8 was also used on Gemini IV and V (Refer NASA SP-5099 "Photography Equipment & Techniques - A survey of NASA developments" Table 1, Page 15.

Thanks for the replies; any further info would be appreciated.

There is some very good footage of Scott Carpenter during his mission, particularly as he works the problem of getting back on angle.

Actually the footage from Carpenter's mission is some of the worst because it was immersed in sea water during his recovery.

And of course there is no onboard footage from Grissom's flight.

I don't belive there is any film from the instrument panel of Cooper's Faith 7. He had a tv camera monuted in that spot on the panel. He did carry a 16-millimeter, all-purpose movie camera, but I have yet to find where he kept it.

There is 16mm camera footage of Cooper, but it is not of the "total mission" nature that the other missions were. It is a bit different. It is on our Mercury set as well, but it is not synchronized to any audio as are some of the others.
