I was wondering if anyone can say what was the earliest date that the Armstrong, Aldrin, Collins crew was known to be the crew that would fly the mission for the first attempted moon landing. I understand the crews were chosen well in advance and it was not clear that it would be 'Apollo 11' that made the first attempt. So at the time they were chosen, assuming all flights between then and their flight were successful, when was it known that these three men would be probably be the ones? Thanks, Paul |

I believe Mike Collins said in 'Carrying the Fire' that they started training in earnest for Apollo 11 in January 1969, and they were training for the first attempt.Randy |

In "First Man", Neil says that Deke Slayton first talked to him about Apollo-11 on December 23rd 1968 during the Apollo-8 mission and asked him how he felt about having Buzz and Mike as possible crew members. Then, on January 4, 1969, Deke told Buzz Aldrin and Mike Collins that they were part of the prime crew of Apollo-11 and that the mission would probably be the first lunar landing attempt. The announcement has been made public on January 9 by NASA officials. Pierre-Yves |

Yeah, the date January 10 stuck in my mind....but apparently as the previous post says it was January 9.Probably would be the million dollar question for me on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire ?", and I would have skewed it ! | |
