I have a question that I have been trying to get answered for years is about the words on the lower right corner of the Apollo Lunar Suit on the chest pack, PLSS remote control unit on the lunar suits. There are four words: OFF MAIN (MOM) TALK What does the acronym "MOM" stand for? I have written to dozens of people from NASA to the National Air & Space Museum. Thanks!! Mike Z |

What were you doing wasting your time with those amateurs when you had the cS forum on hand? MOM is 'momentary' From 'APOLLO EXPERIENCE REPORT - DEVELOPMENT OF THE EXTRAVEHICULAR MOBILITY UNIT' "Another addition to the Apollo 11 PLSS was the push-to-talk switch that allows the crewman to bypass the voice-operated relay of the EVCS. This switch is a three-position, double-pole, double- throw toggle switch with a center "off" position. One position is maintained momentarily (spring loaded to return to the center "off" position when released); the other position is an ("on" position (that is, not momentarily)." No problem Mike, my pleasure - and glad you like the site.Do you mind me asking - why the interest in the MOM label? You don't have a PLSS Remote Control Unit tucked away somewhere do you? Cheers, Matt ------------------ www.spaceracemuseum.com |

Did anyone ever use that setting, or was it like one of those obscure settings on a DVD player which you never use? |

All these years I've been wondering the same, thinking it was a direct line to a crewmember's mother! You know, in case he was having a really needy lunar moment.John W |

Ah yes, the A7L Extravehicular Mom Unit... As to whether the MOM switch was ever used - it was only provided as a backup in case the voice-operated EVCS failed. I'm not aware of that ever happening. Cheers, Matt ------------------ www.spaceracemuseum.com |
