Has anyone seen the command module live TV broadcast from the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) launch? As far as I know, this was the only time that NASA had a live TV camera operating inside the CM during launch. The Soviets had already been doing this for awhile. If anyone finds the footage online, please forward the link. Thanks. |

If I recall correctly, wasn't some of this used in the "For All Mankind" movie? |

I think there may have been a few-second flash of it in the 'spaceflight history' montage used to open the "Star Trek: Enterprise" series? |

Yep. There is a bit in that video. That's the only place I've ever seen it. |

A few seconds of the video also appears in The Mission of Apollo Soyuz, the NASA mission film.Oddly enough, it appears as a bonus feature in Voyage of Discovery, a documentary about STS-114. |

I never saw that footage "live" - I was watching the launch itself. But the video from inside the Apollo was shown at some length on the TV news afterwards. |

I taped that sequence and examined it frame by frame. Turns out that it is mid-deck footage of the STS-95 middeck crew during launch: Chiaki Mukai, John Glenn and Steve Robinson (L-R). At first I thought it was an Apollo too, but the suits were the wrong color, and then the helments were wrong. |

Here are some frames of the ASTP cockpit video during launch. The first view shows the crew during the initial stages of the launch. Vance Brand is in the foreground, with commander Tom Stafford in the background. Deke Slayton was out of frame to the left. Because the boost protective cover is still in place the cabin is rather dark. The second view was taken after the boost protective cover was jettisoned. You can see the light coming in through Stafford's side window. The third view is not of the launch, but shows the crew during transposition and docking in orbit. The camera view is the same, but the crew have removed their helmets and gloves. They did not know the camera was running and Stafford's language was rather colorful as he was having problems during docking to the Docking Module. He was being blinded by the sun and had trouble lining up with the docking target. |

Thanks for making the effort to capture still frames from the video, Ed. That's unique Apollo era video that hardly anyone has seen. Hopefully Mark Gray will include this in one of his fabulous Spacecraft Films DVD sets. Thanks again, Ed! |
