To answer a question in another newsgroup, here are some frame captures of the onboard 16mm footage taken during the manned Mercury missions.

This is Al Shepard.

John Glenn.

This is Scott Carpenter. The pictures are a little grainy because the camera and film had been in the water.

Here we have Wally "are you a turtle" Schirra.

And finally Gordo Cooper. This footage is not often seen. Note that the position of the camera differs from the other missions, or perhaps a wide-angle lens was used.

Ed Hengeveld

(I added Shepard and Glenn to be complete, plus a picture of Cooper's TV-transmission)

As a point of comparison on quality, here are two images of Shepard and Glenn in our new transfer of the Mercury onboards.

And two shots with their visors up.

Working dilligently in Mercury-land...

Best,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Great shots! Can you post these somewhere as full-size frames for a better comparison?Hard to tell how much of an improvement they are at their current size.

Thanks,

Tom

The Shepard photo is a good comparison, even at this small size. To be fair: my frames come from a fifth-generation videotape... Mark has them directly from the source!

I kept them the same size specifically so they could be compared.

I've placed a full rez here: (if it will work)

This transfer was made last fall from the original 16mm film. The Mercury and Gemini onboard film now resides at the National Archives. (Apollo is still in Houston)...

Now the big question is what could Mark do with Ed's ass?

Cheers,

Wow...you can see the reflection out the window in Glenn's visor.

What a sight that must have been.

Ahh the romance of Project Mercury. This picture says it all.

Question for Kris Stoever: I wrote in the first post that Carpenter's camera had been in the water. I remember reading that somewhere, but can't remember where. Can you confirm this?

Excellent stills!!! Do you have the one of CARPENTER knocking on the wall of the spacecraft for fireflies?
GRISSOM'S film is inside...

I saw that, Ed, and you are quite right. Carpenter was dunked during recovery by accident. The winch reversed direction or the helicopter dipped. No one knows. But Carpenter, holding his precious camera/film in one hand high above the waves, was dunked totally beneath the water and then some--the length of his upraised arm holding the camera. Hence the water damage to the film.

I don't have that film loaded right now, but by golly I think I have that in the recovery coverage.

This is one of the most enjoyable sets I have ever worked on.... and I can't wait to get it done... and don't want to finish it...

It's like reading a great book and wanting to get to the end... but not wanting to get to the end...

I found the reference I was referring to! And thanks for the reply, Kris.

The caption of NASA photo 62-MA7-168 (an onboard view of Carpenter) states:
"These pictures were taken with a Milliken 16mm camera using ER film. The grain in the picture is due to the camera getting wet. To keep the film in condition for processing the camera was placed in water to keep film from drying, making it impossible to use. Complete engineering data was obtained from this film, even though the quality was not
good."

Oh man that is beautiful, Mark. Can't wait to get that when it comes out.

And Ed - I thought you specialized only in Apollo "moon" photos. Please send the link to your newer site. <LOL>

It works! Outstanding. I wanted to see it full size to compare it to the 8x10 NASA photos. Any chance you could also post the Shepard visor down shot as well in full-size?

Thanks,

Tom

Gene,

For perhaps the finest evocation of this type of spaceflight play, ca 1963, please check out from the library Thomas Mallon's novel, Aurora 7. It's about the adventures of a starstruck Long Island kid named Gregory, on 24 May 1962. A wonderful book.
