According to my info, John Glenn was launched on his 11th scheduled launch date, and the fourth time he suited up and ingressed the capsule expecting to launch. The first launch attempt was Jan. 27, 1962, and the first scheduled launch date was Jan. 16, but was postponed due to booster fuel tank issues.

Does anyone have a definitive list of all 11 scheduled launch dates and all 4 suited ingress dates?

Per "Project Mercury" (Springer, 2001) by John Catchpole:
  1. Original planned launch Dec. 19, 1961. Canceled on Dec. 7 until,
  2. Jan. 16, 1962. Delay announced on Jan. 3 until,
  3. Jan. 23. Scrubbed prior to suitup due to an oxygen problem on the Atlas.
  4. Jan. 27. SUITED. Weather scrub at T-19 minutes.
  5. Jan 30. Scrubbed due to propellant leak.
  6. Retry planned for Feb. 13. Scrubbed for weather on Feb. 12.
  7. Feb. 14. Weather scrub.
  8. Feb. 15. Weather scrub.
  9. Feb. 16. Weather scrub.
  10. Feb. 18. Weather scrub.
  11. Feb. 20 - launched. Obviously suited.
So here are the 11 planned dates, but can only account for two suited attempts. Anyone else know which other attempts were suited?

I can find no reference to four suit-ups in "This New Ocean" (NASA SP-4201), "Project Mercury: A Chronology" (NASA SP-4001), or John Glenn's autobiography. Only one suit-up is mentioned prior to the launch on Feb. 20th - the one on Jan. 27th.

Does anyone know the date of the launch delay of John Glenn for his Mercury/Atlas 6 flight?

On January 27, 1962 his flight was delayed due to bad weather at the Cape. There is another time that John was in his Friendship 7 capsule and the launch was delayed?

I watched a NASA special about his flight and he stated that on February 20, 1962 it was his third time in the capsule after two launch scrubs, one for weather and one for a problem with the rocket.

Does anyone know when the other launch scrub occurred?

Editor's note: Threads merged.

After doing more research and checking I can only find one mention of John Glenn actually suiting up and being inserted into the Friendship 7 capsule which occurred on Saturday, Jan. 27, 1962 which resulted in a launch scrub, due to weather.

The other time occurred on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 1962 which was his launch day.

I watched a NASA video special about John Glenn and he said that Feb. 20th was the third time that he was suited up and inserted into the capsule. Maybe he was counting his countdown test prior to launch?

Just last week I asked astronaut nurse Dee O'Hara this question and she couldn't remember exactly but she thinks it was either three or four times that he had suited up and climbed aboard Friendship 7.

So I am thinking maybe three times? Once for the countdown practice? Secondly on the Janu. 27th launch scrub? Third for the actual launch on Feb. 20th? If anyone has updated information, please post.

All times are CT (US)
