In light of the fact that tonight begins the Jewish holiday of Passover, Fortune magazine has an article about "the premier name in kosher foods: Manischewitz."

What does this have to do with space history?

Although the author (Paul Lukas) incorrectly describes the event, Gene Cernan was heard saying the company's name during Apollo 17. The article reads:

The wines' ad slogan, "Man, oh, Manischewitz," became so iconic that Apollo 17 astronaut Gene Cernan was heard exclaiming it during his 1973 moonwalk - you can't buy that kind of marketing!
Consulting Eric Jones' Lunar Surface Journal, the actual quote (while loading the rover) is as follows:
117:58:43 Cernan: Doesn't take long, does it? (Jack laughs) Doesn't take long. (Pause) Manischewitz, look at that go! Did you see that?
(Cernan also said it later in the mission, at 140:17:47).

As Jones' notes, "The B. Manischewitz Company has long been a major American producer of kosher foods and, at least during the 1950's and into the 60's, heavily advertised its wines with the phrase "Man, oh, Manischewitz. What a wine." during Apollo 17, Gene often used "Manischewitz" as an exclamation or as a substitute for swearing."

So with that, to all it applies, happy Passover!

God help me! I used to drink the stuff.

It had a Concord Grape taste that reminded me of Welsh's grape juice, but with a kick!

And I gave up alcohol for Lent. Nuts!

That reminds me, I must check on my bottle of wine that commemorated the 40th Anniversary of Sputnik-1 launch. It was one of a limited number (150 I think?) and autographed by about 3 or 4 cosmonauts on its label.

I haven't seen it for years? I wonder if the wife drank it!

The first Pesach ceremony in space... now that will be an interesting challenge - how will they keep the the air filters from becoming clogged with Matzah crumbs!

Which was the first bottle of wine to be taken in space? I know that French spationaut Patrick Baudry took a bottle of French wine onboard the space shuttle but I guess the Russians did so before him?

I remember Buzz took a small bottle of wine to take communion on the Moon.

Probably not Manischewitz.

All times are CT (US)
