Very interesting replies everyone! But let's not forget the crew of Apollo 9. If something had gone wrong during the very first test of the Lunar Module in orbit, albeit in Earth's orbit, then we would not have set foot upon the Moon before the decade was out. And if you check out this image from one of Buzz's panoramas (standing stationary and taking pictures around the horizon) you will see Neil lurking in the shadow of the LM.
