My grandfather was given a framed original of "Earthrise" when he was a project manager for NASA during the Lunar Orbiter missions and I was given that photo in the 80s after he died. My father had it hanging on his wall for decades because my work took me all over the place and I never really settled for long.

My father died last year and the family there decided not to tell me that that photo had been missing for over 8 months and nobody reported it stolen. I am just trying to see if it popped up for sale around March of last year till now. — Bruce

I was hoping for at least some advice on where to start looking for this photo as it was my only connection to my grandfather I had left and now it has sprouted legs.

Do you have a photo of it to post here, a description of how it was framed, or any other identifying details to share, maybe it was personalized or signed in some way?

Armed with more details about the item, members here are good about helping to locate it. We will be on the look out in upcoming public auctions, eBay, private sales, etc. and will post about it if seen.

More information is needed to help as Earthrise photos/prints can be fairly common unless they have some other distinguishing details about them. Hope this helps.

I dont have any pictures as I am being blocked by step siblings from any inventory or pictures of inventory from the house but I remember it looking like this photo and it was framed and hung on the wall for decades before my father passed

This was done by my grandfather he was the project manager for orbiter 1.

I know that the picture was in a very nice frame and well cared for and damn near 4 feet long and it also had a sticker on the back of the frame with Bruce L Elle on it

Last place it resided was in Sebastian, Florida hanging on my fathers wall

If the current holder of the item decides to sell it, their best option would be via one of the space auctions held by the major auction houses. The two biggest are Heritage and RR Auction, who hold multiple space-specific auctions every year. It's also worth keeping an eye on Bonhams, Christies, etc, because they occasionally have similar auctions.

It's also possible that they'll attempt to sell it directly. eBay and Invaluable are the two major possibilities here. Both of those sites allow you to set up keyword notifications. So I recommend creating a few saved searches on those sites, and that way you'll get emails every time something matching those keywords shows up. (As an aside, most of the major auction houses also provide similar notifications.)

As a regular attendee of all of those auctions, I'll certainly keep an eye out for you. And I'm sure many people here will do the same. This is a great community, with some of the most knowledgeable people I've ever met. I hope you eventually recover this item!

I have reached out to a few different people including the curator of the George Eastman House museum who is helping me reach out to a few of the auction houses they deal with.

I am extremely frustrated at the loss of the photo and knowing full well who is responsible but unable to do anything about it until the picture is located.

Good news... after sending evidence that only one person had access to the photo it magically was found last week.

All times are CT (US)
