I just saw an eBay listing for a "flown" mustard seed from Gemini 4. I have a similar print, and I paid a lot more than this. It's an incredibly good price, and I'm considering purchasing it.

However, this is noted as a test print, numbered 1/500. The seller doesn't provide any other details. But I noticed that it's missing the flag. And to my eye, this is not one of the actual mustard seeds. It looks much too large. I believe that being a test print, they attached something else instead to make sure it looked OK. In the displays I've seen, the actual seed is a tiny fraction of this size. This almost looks like foam instead. Does anyone else have an opinion?

The size of the entire presentation seems off. Unless there was a smaller, second run (which is possible, but of which I am unfamiliar) the original issued prints were 23 by 27 inches, without any matting.

As you mention, the originals had a fabric (but not flown) flag attached where this one has a printed graphic and McDivitt's signature, in relation to everything else, was much smaller.

Here is an example from RR Auction:

If the smaller size print is authentic, then it might explain why the mustard seed looks bigger, given its placement on a smaller, more tightly arranged mount.

There were promotional 8.5" X 10.5" color prints made by Ed White III with the same printed "1/1500" serial number at bottom right.

There were no mustard seeds attached to the bottom, though, but just a small black dot.

Underneath the color print of the U.S. flag it reads, "Actual size 23"w x 27"h with a printed signature of Jim McDivitt.

It looks like this framed promotional ad-version with patch that started this topic is one of the issues that I have referred to above. I can't say for sure, but I would be leery if any of the smaller prints have a seed attached.

Thank you both for your help! That makes a lot more sense.

I didn't realize that this was a smaller size, because the seller didn't list the dimensions. But I did notice that the scale of everything seemed off. The "seed" seemed far too big, and the matting seemed enormous for such a large print. If this was full-size, the mat board would make it almost 50". Now that I understand it's a smaller size, it all makes sense.

When I saw this print for such a low price, I almost bought it immediately. I'm so glad I waited. Even though this is an official release and not an outright forgery, I can't imagine it has much value, with a printed signature and no flown material. So thanks again for your help! I hope any potential buyers here see this thread in time.
