Personally, I dislike "signed copy" stickers on the dust jackets or covers of the signed books I buy. However, I hesitate to try to remove them out of fear of damaging the dust jacket or cover.

Do these stickers affect the value at all? What about a damaged dust jacket?

I have a signed copy of Tim Peake's "Limitless" and the dust jacket looks like someone used it to write on.

I have had great luck in removing such stickers with Goo Gone, especially on glossy dustjackets and glossy covers.

If it's a common book why not buy an unsigned copy of an identical book and replace the cover? Or is that a no no?

Leaving aside personal preference, I've noticed that having the "Signed Copy" stickers intact will slightly increase the value. Casual autograph collectors worry about authenticity, but they'll tend to accept any form of "authentication," including a sticker like that.

When I sell autographs on eBay, people will sometimes write and ask if it comes with a COA. When I tell them it doesn't, they'll occasionally ask me to create one. I've never understood how they think that helps. But for some people, it does.

I've also noticed that on eBay, a lot of known forgers are adding "numbered hologram stickers" to the front of every photo they sell. The signatures are very obviously fake, but because they have a completely meaningless serial number on a shiny sticker, people will buy them.

So for resale value, the stickers tend to offer the same sense of authenticity for some people. Of course, anyone could make those stickers, or swap dust jackets with a forged copy. But a surprising amount of people simply don't think that carefully. "Of course it's real - there's a sticker on the front that says it is."

Does it matter if a book is signed on a page or if the signature is on a bookplate that's stuck to the page?

I think it is generally accepted that a signed page is preferable to a book plate.
