In general, does an autopen signature add value to a photograph, cover or other item? Or would an unsigned/clean version have the same value and/or interest?

In my opinion, and for the most part, they are definitely more valuable, particularly crew lithographs.

There was a time when in my opinion unsigned crew lithos were worth perhaps more than currently: there was an opportunity to add one or more signatures. But alas, as we lose these guys there is less demand for unsigned lithos.

It depends on the individual collector I would think.
I prefer an autopen signature on a photograph but that's just me. I know nothing of the value of some photos and serious photography collectors might consider an autopen signature damage to the item.
The way I see it is that autopen signed items are a NASA product that may have passed through the astronauts offices (hallowed ground) if you like. One photo comes to mind with a huge increase in value with autopen signatures, the Apollo 1 crew litho. They are fetching high prices lately.
