I recently picked up my holy grail item, a signed cover from the crew of STS-107. I have tossed around the idea of having the signed cover encapsulated for maximum protection and preservation. Does anyone have any opinion on this? Is there a downside to doing this? Or is this completely unnecessary? Thanks y'all! |

Congratulations on your signed cover. I recently had a STS-107 cover partially signed crew cover slabbed by PDA, but I didn't enjoy it in my collection like that. My opinion, I would not encapsulate your cover in any way other than a typical protective cover sleeve. |

If encapsulation is easily reversible then why not. If it isn't then avoid in my opinion. There are alternate methods that will safely protect the piece. |

In my view, slabs are nice for small items. I sometimes get signed baseball cards slabbed, but it's mostly for aesthetic purposes... NOT preservation or protection. For archival storage, nothing beats a simple mylar sleeve. A slab is no more "archival" than a mylar sleeve. If protecting from physical damage is a concern, then slide the mylar sleeve into a rigid top holder. That will certainly protect it from any accidental drop or household mishap short of your roof collapsing on it. Bottom line is this: get your item slabbed if you like the way it looks. But you do NOT need slabbing from an archival or protection standpoint. |

Many thanks to everyone for the replies and offering their thoughts. It certainly gives me a lot to think about and I think I will end up staying away from slabbing after all. Especially if collectors with much more experience than I agree that preservation can be accomplished with much less. |
