In the Armstrong Family Collection auction this month, I won a set of six photos from Neil's collection. I didn't notice in the auction, but when they arrived, I found that they had handwritten notations on the back. Five of the notations begin with a 'W', and the other begins with an 'S'. To me, both seem to match Neil's handwriting; but I'm not an expert at all. In the first picture, my set's notations are on the left, with some of Neil's examples on the right. In the second photo, my photo is the one on top in the red box. They look like the same handwriting to my untrained eye, but I'd love an expert opinion. Thank you!

The first batch. The "w" reference or index numbers down the left side I suspect have been done by Neil's PA, most likely Vivian White. The writing to the right of the same image appears to be in Neil's hand. That would suggest the single "S" reference number would also be by his PA. The writing in the bottom image (sincere etc) I believe is in Armstrong's hand. Just my opinion: I am no expert! |

Thank you for the information! I should have assumed that anything with Neil's handwriting would have caught the eye of the auctioneers, who would have heavily advertised that fact on the listing. I'm happy to have an answer either way, so thanks again for your help with this! |

While I'm here, I realize that I should have also included another photo I won, which isn't related to the other set. This was written when Neil was 17. Any opinions of this would be much appreciated. Sorry if I'm being a pest! |

Not a lot to go on there. The faint "w" perhaps indicative of Neil's hand. |

Yes, this is a difficult one to pinpoint. Thanks for your thoughts on it! |

I can't comment on the handwriting but I'm sure I'm not the only one whos is curious to see the other side of the photos you won! |

Neil, I'd be happy to include photos, but I think the best way to see them is at the auction site. Heritage did a fantastic job of scanning and uploading high resolution images. My set can be found here. Mine are rather boring, which is why I was able to afford them. But I highly recommend browsing the entire auction, which is full of rare photos you can download in very high quality for your collection. The latest auction had a photo of Neil throwing a frisbee, and it's probably my very favorite photo of him. I really wanted that one, but it sold for over $4,000. So it's really nice that Heritage added such nice scans, so we can at least have digital versions. |

Done a fair bit of this over the past few months. Good fun isn't it? An idea might be to look at the annotations on the transparencies which also appeared in these auctions as the numbers might guide you to whose hand it is/was. Regarding the early handwriting, wasn't there also an Armstrong childhood diary in the auction - were there images of the diary entries? You're right about Heritage, congrats to them for producing and apparently archiving such fantastic quality images. Yes, that frisbee shot hit the stratosphere. |
