I live in Wapakoneta, Ohio, and have always enjoyed looking for unusual Neil Armstrong items.

A couple of weeks ago, a friend and I were approached, to buy the collection, of a high school friend of his. Being in a hurry, to leave for work, I quickly looked at the collection, before purchasing. After closer examination, while it does have some volume, I find only about 20%, of any real interest.

The collection spans from roughly 1962, to 1972, with heavy interest in Neil's two homecoming parades. The 1947 classmates were basically treated as dignitaries, that included special seating, and meals, for the events. His friend was smart enough to carry a camera, and took some really nice photos.

While not as exciting as many of the topics covered on this website, I do find the collection in total, very interesting.

There are only a few signed items, which include a slightly faded spacesuit photo, and a couple of greeting cards.

My favorite item? A greeting card mailed out at Christmas time, 1962. Mr. Armstrong basically says that they just moved to Houston, and he hasn't done anything worth being congratulated on, yet, but, he hopes to. The card is about three or four paragraphs, in length. He signed it "Jan and Neil Armstrong."

I'm not saying that this collection has a lot of monetary value, but, I do find it to show an interesting, local aspect, of his NASA career.

Unfortunately, as I have someone else as a shared investor, the collection must somehow be sold. I don't think that he will allow me to simply buy out his part. My primary objectives are to take care of my friend, and to see that the items are put on a platform, that allows them to receive the exposure, they deserve.

As I am leaving for work, very soon, photographs will be added, sometime over the weekend.

Over the past several years, I have greatly enjoyed reading some of the posts, on this site. I do appreciate the fact that I have now been allowed to make at least a small contribution, to it.

Great that you and your friend are possessors of a small slice of aerospace history! From what I read in your post, it seems the majority of the items are ephemera (articles, photos, etc.) so it's important to preserve them in sleeves, albums or envelopes, if not already in them. Second, be sure to take photos to go with an inventory, for insurance and later appraisal purposes.

Lastly, in addition to posting photos of the most interesting items on this thread, you might consider posting some on Facebook pages devoted to Apollo and one on Space Memorabilia & Flown Artifacts. You may get feedback or information helpful for your collection. Good luck!

Thanks. I'll post pictures, after getting everything organized. There are a few signed items, but, I was more interested in the photographs.

The signed items are a WSS photo, with a really faded signature, and some holiday cards. The best one of which, was written just a few months after joining NASA.

There is one image of a Wapakoneta building, that was used as the 1969 parade headquarters. Neil isn't in it, therefore, I'll be able to make postcards, and limited edition prints, which should go over well, locally.

Thanks, for the response!!
