Can anyone please confirm my thoughts on two items on eBay this week? The first is an Apollo 11 crew signed cover I believe to be all autopen, eBay 333136355435.

The other one is a Jack Swigert but I'm not sure at all with it. The price is high though. eBay 333136355324.

They are both from the same seller. Thanks in advance.

You are correct, the Apollo 11 signature are autopens.

As for the Swigert, it looks to be an autopen as well, though one where the operator was either pulling the cover through sloppily or bumping the machine while it was operating. Overlaying the known pattern shows segments of the signature that line up exactly, which would not happen naturally.

Even though the typed message on the envelope says "printed matter," the autographs are not printed, but autopens.

Before you ask: the cover "signed" by Fred Haise offered by the same seller is not "printed" either.

Has anyone notified the seller? I just did.

I gave him the link to the Astronaut Autopen guide, explained how autopens work, and he said he'd "check the signatures against the guide." He also reports he got them from a "German Philatelist."

Usual responses, let's see what he does. If he doesn't remove them shortly I'll try reporting him.

I wrote to him too and got an aggressive reply.

Well, he agreed they were autopens, said he "paid through the nose for them through a German philatelist", yet no movement on modifying or removing.

All times are CT (US)
