Is this Vance Brand autograph genuine? Can't find an autopen example. |

Here is a fdc in my ASTP exhibit. The Vance Brand signatures both look good. |

Dirk, I'm not authoritative enough to say one way or the other but one thing that stands out on your first example is the heavy dot mark of ink at the end of the motion on the "V" and the "e" of "Vance" and the "d" at the end of "Brand."I've used autopens before in government work and that heavy dot of ink at the end of motion is often a sign of autopen. Take my observation for what it is worth which might not be more than 2 cents. |

Jonny, thanks for your remark. But I have a lot of autopens without dots, and genuine signatures with dots (obtained by sending a photo to to the astronaut — the Duke signatures, or as Brands, obtained in 2012 at an autograph event in the US. These three have dots, but are genuine. I have more.I had this discussion also in the past with another collector. How thicker the used pen, and in some cases slowlier the signature was set, the more you can have these dots. But there are indeed autopens with dots. When I do not find a match with an autopen signature I try to find collectors who have the same (so an unknown autopen), or in some times a secretarial. But it is always an interesting point of discussion, also for other collectors who may have doubts about some autographs.

The last Brand signature shown is what being 87+ years old does to your signature over the years. |

All the signautres here are fine, Dirk, in my opinion (Duke included) and as John pointed out, as with Brand, he currently signs this way now in most cases. |
