Here three different signatures of James Lovell, but all three real (vintage through the mail, two respectable sellers):

I am not an authenticator but I have had items signed by Lovell in person. Comparing them with the items I own, the first two are legitimate, the third is doubtful. |

I'm not an authenticator either, and I'm glad I'm not. I have a bunch of in person and custom Novaspace Lovell autographs. They vary widely. Though I agree the first two seem more typical, I wouldn't discount the third. |

Yes I wouldn't discount the last one either, especially if it's from a good dealer. Signatures can change as people get older. |

I asked the question, because the first two came from known dealers, last third one I obtained many years ago (somewhere in the 70 ties) through the mail from NASA. In that period I also got a signed WSS from Swigert.I later bought the other two because the vintage one has some folds left under, as in that time signed lithos were not always sended with hard cardboard, and if so, they were not attached to that hard cardboard, so I had more "damaged" lithos from the early years. I just asked myself why the signature changed in different styles... |

The third style is of particular interest. I have noted this style over the past few years and had some discussions with others regarding it. The relative size of certain letters and proportion varies significantly from verified Lovell signatures of any other era. When you see the same constellation of atypical traits appearing enough to create a distinct "style," I believe it is worth investigating. I have a number of these in my files, and the ones I have been able to trace, all were obtained through-the-mail. I have never seen this style with a personalization. I asked James Lovell several years ago about this style, and he stated that he believed it was not authentic. Yet, he also insisted he never authorized a secretary to sign for him. Given there is reliable provenance tracing this style back to NASA mail requests, I suspect someone may have been signing for Lovell — perhaps without his knowledge. |
