I just came across a whole bunch of press photos from a few Mercury flights and was hoping you might help me a bit with some info about what I've got here. I know a bit about the NASA serial numbered photos: red serials, black serials, etc. I've got many black serial numbered photos, (see here) but also some I haven't seen before.I have a number of glossy black and white period photos of various Mercury missions, with no serial number on the front, and some form of stamping and caption on the back. Some of them have "NASA" repeating in a certain area, and many are stamped with a stamp reading "Air Force Missile Test Center Photographic Laboratory" or "AFMTC Photo Lab, Patrick AFB, Florida." They all seem to be quite old. Some photos of what I mean are here (showing the reverse of the images):
As this came with a lot of items from a journalist, I'm guessing this is another type of press photos issued, but beyond that, I'm clueless. I'm not really much of a photo collector so any info would be much appreciated. |

Not all NASA photos came with serial numbers on the front. Most of the examples you show here do have serial numbers, but they are on the back instead of the front.Photos originating from Houston seemed to be the most consistent about using serial numbers on the front (especially photos in the "S" series). Photos from the Cape might have them on the front, but often they were on the back too. And there are NASA photos that sometimes had little or no information printed on them. For the sake of collecting, the color photos with the red serial numbers on the front are typically the most desirable. | |
