I first became fascinated about space exploration as a kid during the Shuttle-Mir Program. I was 9 when the first mission launched and I remember following the entire program in the news. It is what really sparked my interest and as a result it has a very place in my heart.

Some time ago, I thought it would be a fun project to get a 8x10 photo of STS-71 docked to Mir and try and get it signed by all seven Shuttle-Mir resident astronauts.

I doubt that I will be able to get it signed by all seven because some are reluctant signers, but you never know. Thus far it is signed by two.

I have been thinking that I want to put some kind of framed display together with the photo and a few others things. I have a flown STS-91 Shuttle-Mir flag and I was thinking I might pick up all the patches from the missions and do a matted and framed display.

I wanted to use "authentic" 4 inch patches but due to the size required I might need to do 3 inch patches.

I spent some time this morning with photoshop mocking up an idea, and I think I like how it turned out. Obviously this is a long term thing and I want to get a few more signatures first, but this is what I came up with.

Any thoughts, opinions or suggestions?

Nice work and a great idea. I would ask whether the flown flag is on the original presentation and if so, make sure you leave the presentation intact and hide the rest under the mat.

Yes, it is. My plan is to leave it intact under the matting.

The display as you have designed it looks great...

My only suggestion: right now, the patches (even at three inches) dominate the layout and could draw the eye away from the signed photo and flown flag. If you'd like to put the focus on those two pieces, then you might consider using the mission insignia lapel pins (as produced by Winco for NASA, for example), which would then let you fit all 12 missions in the same space you currently have the STS-60 and STS-63 patches.

I really like that idea, I might consider that. Maybe I will do another mockup with that and compare them. Thanks!

Do you happen to have a link to where I can find images of the pins? I'd like to look at them. The only concern I have is does such a pin exist for the Soyuz TM-21 mission which did play a big role in the program. I could always omit it if needed, but I'd rather not.

Winco doesn't have an online catalog.

The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex stocks their mission pins (or did the last time I looked), so you could contact them or you reach out to Winco directly (or email Winco's order processing supervisor).

Thank you Robert. I have reached out to Winco and will followup with them. Once I play around with the details, I will do another mockup and compare them.

So, I had a little more time than I expected this afternoon (had a patient not show up), so I decided to play with photoshop a little more and see what I could come up with.

Based on what I read online, most of the lapel pins are roughly 1 inch in diameter, so I used that as a general guideline and created a new display using them instead of patches. I made it as close to scale as I could with the information available.

I added a couple other patches to fill it out but I think this draws the attention to the right items a lot better.

Any other thoughts?

My thoughts are the signed photo as the center, the pins surrounding it, and the flag at the bottom. Turning the display sideways from how the rectangular shape is now.

All times are CT (US)
