I was hoping someone can help educate me. This cover is listed as an Auto Insurance Cover. I am not sure what that implies.

I have several of the John Young Apollo 16 insurance covers and they are all signed on the back as provenance. Would this be considered an insurance-type cover or a true insurance cover as in astronaut owned?

I think he means to say "signed, autographed" insurance cover.

Yes, Chuck, it's an Apollo 16 crew signed insurance cover and I think this particular cover was one of mine beforehand from Bishop/crew owned.

So if I understand correctly. This was a crew owned cover from Al Bishop's collection. I may be incorrect in the assumption that all true insurance covers were astronaut owned?

As always trying to educate myself. Thanks for the insight.

To answer your question, Chuck, all of Al Bishop's Apollo 16 crew signed insignia covers were first retained by the Apollo 16 crew families before and throughout their lunar voyage.

After the lunar explorers returned from the moon, several of their crew signed insurance covers were handed to Bishop as a "thank you" for providing the crew with the insignia covers in the first place and for his dedicated close friendship and support to each crewman.

Therefore, as I see it, the Bishop covers would be considered genuine crew signed insurance covers since they were first held by the astronaut families throughout
the flight of Apollo 16.

Thank you Ken, That is great information. I have also seen several Apollo astronauts selling insurance covers given to them by other crews. I have an Apollo 12 cover from Ed Gibson's collection.

All times are CT (US)
