I recently purchased a flown flag on a certificate. The certificate itself is in bad condition and was wondering if there is a way to have a new one made and transfer the flag to it? Has anyone done this before?

If you want to preserve the provenance of the flown flag, then I would recommend not trying to replace the certificate. Unless the flag itself is signed and certified by an astronaut on the mission or by a NASA official who would be trusted by future collectors (i.e., Kranz, Kraft, Lunney, Windler, etc), then seperating the flag from the certificate will make it a "possibly flown" flag.

That having been said, if you don't care about ever selling it or being able to prove flown status, then you could try it.

You might be better off to have it framed in such a way that the framer opens a "window" in the matte for the flag to be displayed in and have the matte cover the rest of the certificate (and do it in such a way that the certificate is not actually attached to the matte or the frame).

I am not sure I agree with that assessment. I have a ALT flown flag award that was in very bad condition but the flag was in great condition. The flag has been remounted in a new ALT display (not a copy of the old certificate) And I have the original award certificate in a sleeve on the back of the picture.

It is my opinion that as long as you photograph the flag on the certificate together and keep the original award certificate with the flag however displayed it is good provenance.
