Hey friends! I was curious of what you all thought about the signatures on this multi-signed Earthrise.

I'm not an expert (yet) on authenticating signatures but I'm getting better at honing my skills. I thought some of these could be okay, but some of them make me quite uncomfortable. Could some of the more experienced authenticators chime in on this piece? Thanks!

All of the signatures are authentic, but the piece is not. This is a commercially-produced pre-print — it is a reproduction of the originally-autographed print.

What are people's thoughts on the effect of selling pre-printed copies on the value of the original picture?

Some say it makes the original piece more famous, thus increasing the value.

Others say it lowers the value by casting doubt that the original may just be another copy.

Others say they'd spend less on it because they want an original piece, not a piece that everyone who wants one is hanging in their living room. (Some even refuse to post high resolution shots of their collection out of fear that someone will print one out.)

Others say they'd love to have a piece that they know multiple people have copied, and will pay more for that honor.

Value ultimately comes down to what people will pay. As such, it's as subjective as the people themselves. There may be market research on this subject where people tracked comparative pieces, but I wouldn't put too much stock in value tracking, as it will vary by day, situation, and person.

Pre-printed copies should always be stamped copy on the back so future owners know it is a copy of the original.

It is never a problem to make a copy until someone sell that copy as original. There are not many people that can tell the difference until an expert sees it and they find that pricey signed photograph is a basically worthless copy and the money spent is gone.

I think this should apply to copies of all items — patches, signed photographs, models and any other item that may be a high quality copy but is still a copy.

That is somewhat of a good idea. The big problem with that is when the owner gets it framed. If it is a good framing job, people might be loath to pull off the paper backing on the frame and remove the picture to see if it is stamped. Many times the framing is worth more than the copy.

If it is sold as a copy that would be true. As an original the item may be worth much more then the sealing paper on a frame.

I have opened many framed items over the years and I always put them back in the same frame if its a good framing job. I keep a 3 foot roll of brown paper and a tube of Elmer's glue to recover the backing so all that is lost is decals. It is simple easy and most of all you know what you are buying.
