I just saw that Ed Mitchell's estate is being sold in Florida, Nov. 11-13.
The sale consists of some very rare and one of a kind personal items belonging to him, including a NASA pilot's jacket and a flight suit worn by him during his work on Apollo 14, complete with letter of authentication from Dr. Mitchell's daughter. Also there is an ultra rare Camp David jacket with an Apollo patch, gifted to Dr. Mitchell by President Nixon. A true museum piece!

Also for sale are hundreds of rare books, some signed by authors and other astronauts inscribed to Dr. Mitchell! In addition, there are a few rare special limited edition printings of "The Way of the Explorer," signed by Dr. Mitchell and with certificates of authenticity. A real opportunity to buy a piece of true American History!

Just added to the sale are three life masks of Dr. Mitchell done in his later years... beyond rare! Check back to see pictures as sale nears to see more items. Presales will be considered for specific items, just ask.

I would suggest getting there early and start grabbing everything as quickly as possible.

Presales? How in the world (pun intended)? Madness. Not about the way to go about this.

Lot 2 of 123 in the Edgar Mitchell estate sale is a framed spoof Apollo 14 "Beep Beep" / "Sniff Sniff" patch design, in which I have a personal interest. Should any collectSPACE member purchase that particular item please drop me a line and I will share with them the story.

And for the record, the framed presentation piece depicting the Apollo 14 recovery carrier was one of Edgar's most prized possessions. The fact that his name was spelled "Egar" appealed hugely to his sense of humour.

Rick, they are taking presales. Just email them the item you want and they may sell it to you before the sale.

I personally would love to purchase a few of those books...

Thanks for the suggestion but the current slump of the pound against the US dollar post Brexit precludes any significant purchases for the time being.

Can't help but notice the lunar surface flown microfilm bible all nicely framed on the wall...

Per the estate sale company, the actual flown bible microfilms are not in the frames. Apparently the actual film was removed and donated to somewhere - and the framed bible microfilm presentations are just presentations with no actual flown items.

The Mitchell estate sale will be taking place one week later than originally scheduled — it will now be November 18th to 20th.

For those attending the ASF Space Rendezvous, the estate seller will have a table with items from Mitchell's estate at the show. I received an email from him saying the following:

I am going to bring many of the items to, and will set up a table at the Space Rendezvous at the Kennedy Space Center next weekend alongside the astronauts who will be signing there and will run the house sale the following weekend. At this point, I do not believe I will be doing any pre-selling prior to next weekend's event... The only items that will not be sold until the sale itself will be the jackets and the flight suit unless someone offers an outrageous amount.

I will not be bringing everything to the Space Rendezvous, just pictures and books, a few small award items and the yellow jacket and blue flight suit, but will only be taking bids on the last two items and will wait till the sale to sell them, again, unless we get a crazy offer.

This looks amazing.

Do we know if any flown items will be available or is it possible that a separate auction might take place?

Just think, had he not have attempted to originally auction it, there could have been a lunar surface flown DAC in the mix...

...which, in turn, would have very likely been illegal for the estate to sell because it was the Mitchell case coupled with the Lovell and Schweickart inquiry that led to the 2012 law reconfirming Apollo-era astronauts' rights to the spacecraft hardware they retained as mementos.

Had he not attempted to auction his DAC then it might still be the property of NASA today.

(Looks like Robert beat my post by seconds.)

My understanding is that the family kept flown items. The estate sale will include a flight suit and flight jackets. There are a lot of books to Mitchell from other astronauts and authors, red number photos and the like.

All times are CT (US)
