A friend of mine sent this image to me asking if I knew anything about this item. This appears to be a segment of Beta cloth from Apollo 16, has anyone seen anything like this? This item is from a relative of NASA engineer named Bardi.

He is interested to know what it is and what value it might have. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

I recently discovered that due to poor performance with the Beta cloth stowage pouches NASA switched to Nomex stowage at some point. The Beta cloth did not hold up well to heavy use so Nomex was used as a fireproof substitute.

The Beta fabric swatch is mostly interesting because it was removed from the LM before launch. The fabric itself is readily found on Apollo pouches and other items. These are often available at auctions and sometimes at low prices.

As a LM souvenir I am guessing the swatch would be worth $100-200.

Regarding switching to Nomex, I believe that did not happen until the Space Shuttle program. Most if not all of the shuttle pouches were Nomex. The shuttle seat cushions, as well as the early blue flight suits, were also Nomex.

All times are CT (US)
