Okay, I need the help of cS.

Fred Haise has donated a flown fragment of an Apollo 13 Lunar Bible for the Space Walk of Fame Museum auction. As I have never seen one of these sell I was hoping someone here might be able to help me set a reasonable opening bid and what might be an expected sale price. I try not to ask value on cS but I feel this is a good exception. Thanks in advance.

Update: I received the Lunar Bible today and I was incorrect. It is not a fragment but a complete 1245 page Lunar Bible with CoA from Fred Haise.

But I still have no idea on value as the only ones I have seen sell where also flown on Apollo 14. Any information would help.

This won't help with the valuation, but an Apollo 13-flown Lunar Bible was sold by RR Auction in November 2013 as part of a lot that also included Apollo 12 and Apollo 14 flown bibles.

But as a point of comparison, a complete Lunar Bible that was flown on Apollo 13 and Apollo 14, which Edgar Mitchell presented to Bob Hope, sold for $21,250 at Heritage in November 2015.

Thank you Robert.

I spoke to Ken Havekotte and he states that every lunar bible was flown on Apollo 12 and slated to land on the lunar surface but these where mistakenly packed in the CSM and not in the LEM so all 512 flew again on Apollo 13 for a second trip to the moon. With the well documented Apollo 13 mission abort, 300 of the 512 flew with Edgar Mitchell on Apollo 14 finally making it to the lunar surface.

I have emailed Fred Haise about the Apollo 12 flight as his CoA only lists the trip aboard Apollo 13. No matter what the outcome it seems very rare to have a complete flown Lunar Bible from any of the trips to the moon with such great provenance.

I believe Ken may be mistaken.

From what I've read, though the intention was to fly a package of microfilm bibles on Apollo 12, all but one were forgotten on Earth. As such 512 were flown on Apollo 13, 300 of those were flown on Apollo 14 and of those, 200 remained aboard Kitty Hawk and 100 were landed on the moon aboard Antares.

That is correct, Robert, as it was intended to fly a bunch of microfilm Bibles onboard LM-6 by Alan Bean.

My apologies to Chuck as there was only one full Bible that had made its way on the Apollo 12 command ship, by accident, instead of stowing it inside LM-Intrepid for a lunar landing.

One of the flown Apollo 13 lunar Bibles, donated by Fred Haise, will be a highlight feature — as Chuck first reported to us — in the first-ever public auction next month of space memorabilia by the U.S. Space Walk of Fame in Titusville, FL, that Chuck is handling for the Foundation.

I love this forum. I do not believe there is any space related question that can not be answered by the great people who frequent this site.

Thank you Ken and Robert you are both very helpful and I hope you know how much I appreciate your sharing your knowledge with me.

A full Apollo 13 Bible sold for $15,000 back in 2009. With Fred's COA, that would be a reasonable price.

Only one microfilm Bible flew on Apollo 12. Al flew in the CSM. I owned it. 512 Bibles flew on Apollo 13, I owned (courtesy of Robert) Harold Hill's Bible and archive. Harold was second in command of the Apollo Prayer League under John Stout. 300 Bibles flew on Apollo 14. 200 in the CSM and 100 in the LM. None went outside. I owned one of the Bibles given by Rev Stout to the White Family #14-064. I owned a flown Honor Roll that was carried as part of the Bible package. I also owned Edgar Mitchell's PPK bag that held the Bibles while on the Moon.

There is a lot to the complete story of the lunar Bibles. They are an interesting artifact from the lunar landings.

Chuck, I was proud of the collection, but I became fond of space flown watches and they don't come cheap.

I still maintain several bible fragments with Edgar Mitchell's and Jim Lovell's signatures on them.

I wish the Space Walk of Fame nothing but great luck in this auction. If you need any assistance with information on the Lunar Bible that you will have for auction, then please do not hesitate to email me.

OK. So Fred Haise donated this to the museum for our fundraiser auction. We decided to start the biding at $7,500. I hope this is a fair starting price. With the emails I received it seems to be a very low starting point. The Space Walk of Fame auction is listed in the auction section.

Could there be any that did not fly on any Apollo mission?

$7500 is a good starting place, but overall I think it depends on how many high rollers are aware of the auction or it may go unsold.

All the information you would need on the bibles can be found on this site.

That is a great site. Wish I had found it before I wrote the listing, but makes a great reference. And I sure hope to have a few high rollers we have several high end items including the Hindenburg artifacts. Thank you
