Wow, that's a lot of money for what once was a great piece of space history. Painful to look at.

Next time someone will be selling "ashes of a once very nice white suit portrait signed by Neil Armstrong"...

Looks like young "John" has some explaining to do! What a shame.

Shame once bidding has ended, one can not look closely to see how bad this really was.

I think someone could restore that picture to a presentable state. A seven inch bullion Apollo 11 patch strategically placed over the bad area with the image tilted on a slight angle with a nice dark mating over top would make a nice presentation I would be proud to own for $400. That's assuming the signature is real.

I just hope the buyer is happy... even $400 is a lot of money for that.

I was thinking you could place the torn photo over a duplicate complete photo, but the patch idea is great as well.

A recent event that happened to me makes me wonder how many autographs get lost. A friend of mine found a Doctor Who book, autographed by the author, and actor in the show, Ian Marter. He died back in the 80s. When he found the book, he worked as security at a recycling plant, that rare autographed book was about to be destroyed. It apparently came from an estate closing.

Anybody think the signature is NOT real?

In my opinion, it's no question authentic.

It's also my opinion that paying $400 for it was an unwise purchase. It would likely take hundreds of dollars and plenty of time to rehabilitate it into something presentable. And you are still left with a severely damaged item that was prettied up and will be difficult to liquidate in the future.

We're not talking about a rare or unique pose here. You can buy a personalized Armstrong litho in mint condition for $850 - $1,000 if you are patient.

Maybe the winner owns a frame shop and is a paper doctor who can do all the work for him or herself. Other than that, I can't imagine a scenario where it's worth the time and effort given the initial $400 investment.

I purchased this damaged Armstrong photo and finally got around to framing it. Actually came out better then I could have hoped.

Thank you for following up and sharing the end result. It's nice to see things on the brink of death be brought back to life for the love of the hobby.
