I am going to get my Dragon 1:72 scale Saturn V rocket model autographed and was wondering if anyone had any experience with this? Curious what I should use to have the astronauts use to sign?

I always use Ultrafine black Sharpie pens because they are resilient and are compatible with all sorts of materials such as plastic. I do find that the next nib size up, the "fine" nib can be too thick if a signature is small. Why not buy both types and try them out first?

You need to be happy because it will bug you forever if the signature looks a mess afterwards. Remember - pens are cheap. Your precious item is not. Buy a few different pens and experiment first.

I have been getting signatures on a Saturn V wooden desktop model for the past 15 years. Each time it was signed with a black Sharpie.

Despite being stored in a dark closet 90% of the time — and never in direct sunlight — some signatures have notable fading, and others look as fresh as the day it was signed.

Go figure.

Could be some differences in wood porosity?

I don't think so. It's a professionally painted and finished desk model. Surface is totally sealed. My guess is it shows the variance you can get from the same manufacturer over time with different ink dye lots.

To me the lesson learned is that it can always be a roll of the dice. There are no guarantees with any pen type.

They can blotch, so make sure they do a practice line or two before they sign. Have a couple as they tend to fail quickly.

Also, I have a Shuttle Training Aircraft model signed by four astronauts, all signed the same day. The three signed by a black thin point Sharpie has faded to a green color, the regular tip style black sharpie is as good as the day it was signed. Go figure.

Sharpie has recently been advertising on TV its new Sharpie Extreme Fade Resistant line of pens.
Sharpie Extreme permanent markers have high-contrast ink that resists fading when exposed to harsh UV rays, rain, snow, and even mud.
The pens are being marketed for use with outdoor sports equipment, but can be used on plastic, glass and wood.

Thanks for all the responses. Anyone have a picture of a Saturn V rocket model? I'm getting the Dragon 4 foot 11" one signed.

Have sent an email to Sharpie. Still no response on where to buy the eXtremes, preferably box of blue.

Got my rocket signed by Lovell this weekend. I used one of the fade resistant Sharpies and I think it worked pretty good.

All times are CT (US)
