On a whim, I got a "The Martian" potato through the mail. Any way to preserve it? Or just take pictures and save the Matt Damon stamp? |

I got mine in the mail today. I took a picture of it in my mailbox for Facebook, and later I'll save the stamp and then preserve the potato with butter, cheese, salt and pepper. |

Steve, realize you were probably joking, but its advised you do not eat the potato: We do not recommend you consume the potato after it has traveled across the country inside of trucks, planes, and postal service bags. It has touched a lot of germs by the time it arrives to the recipient. |

After you eye its picture, wrap it in aluminum foil, in a freezer bag at your grocers, and treat it like a piece of wedding cake, freeze it. Removing it for show and tell shouldn't be too hard. Just a suggestion. |

I think vacuum sealing would help preserve it, like with a foodsaver. Then freeze it. Or seal it in acrylic, though that method is probably not cost effective. Any way to keep air and moisture away from the potato.Hey Steve, you forgot bacon bits and sour cream!

It has touched a lot of germs by the time it arrives to the recipient. So the marketing folks at 20th Century Fox don't think my immune/digestive systems can handle what a potato picks up inside of trucks, planes, and postal service bags? CHALLENGE ACCEPTED. |

It is grown in dirt, with fertilizer and other chemicals. It is shipped in bags, often mesh or cardboard boxes. It is sold in stores in mesh bags or individually, which, who knows, how many people might have handled. Wash it well, and enjoy it. |

Their lawyers, no doubt, had to put that boilerplate warning just in case someone tried to eat it raw then sue the movie company for that big paycheck that all company suits fear... |

Just sprinkle a little crushed Vicodin on it and you'll be fine. |

For the record, Fox had/has nothing to do with it. The warning accompanies all potatoes sent by Mail A Spud, including those purchased before and after the promotion for $9.99. |

Cut it into chunks and cram it into the dirt, and next year you'll have a whole bushel of "martian" potatoes. |
