I picked these postcard sized pieces up years ago online. I think the signatures look right, but at the time my knowledge of such pieces was limited so I don't know what to think.

Each postcard is attached to a larger paper sheet that says "VIP" on the top as has some text (German I think) below the card. The card itself is in a plastic sleeve and the back says "VIP KARTE Alan Bean." The card appears to be signed in some kind of pencil and both are cancelled and dated February 20, 1987.

What do you think of these?

Thanks.

Does anyone else agree? Personally, I always thought these two looked good...just wanted a few other opinions.

Also, does anyone know who made these cards and for what reason?

For some background about the signed German cards; They were perhaps one of the the first commercial signed pieces done in quantities like this.

Space stamp/cover dealer Michael Gode of Germany had them printed and later signed by former astronauts Walt Cunningham, Frank Borman, Alan Bean, Charlie Duke, and shuttle astronauts Ulf Merbold and Reinhard Furrer (did I miss anyone else in the series)?

I was able to acquire many sets of them from Michael as we had worked together on many shuttle cover projects. This was way-back during the 1980s and I still have a few of them left over.

All the signatures are authentic on the cards.

I believe there was also James McDivitt in the set.

Yes, indeed, thanks "pharoid" as McDivitt was a part of the VIP card set. Very good!

I've also seen Jim Irwin on these.

And for JasonB, oh my gosh, how could I forget Irwin! I think the 8th lunar explorer was one of the first in the card series to sign up for the signing project with Gode.

I had one of the Jim Irwin cards, but the postmark was Feb. 20 and 21, 1988 at Lansing, Michigan. It was a framed presentation without the VIP backing.

The Irwin signed cards, of the issues I have, do have "VIP Karte" on the back of them with "James B. Irwin." It's one of the earlier/first card issues of the series (1988) picturing Irwin saluting the US flag with LM-Falcon in the background.

All times are CT (US)
