I know value ultimately comes down to simply what one is willing to pay for a piece, but what are your thoughts on what an Alan Shepard signed (on the title page, no bookplate) copy of "Moonshot" and a Jim Irwin signed and inscribed copy of "To Rule the Night" are worth, assuming both are hardcover, later printings in fairly good condition?

Also, do you anticipate both holding their value over time? Thanks!

Ballpark inscribed Irwin, $50 to $90 in my opinion.

Shepard's anywhere from $50 to $200, depending on the signature; a rushed barely recogniseable squiggle at the lower end and a considered "proper" signature at the top end.

Mike, just my personal $0.02 on "Moon Shot" — to me, it ranks as one of the least desirable signed Shepard items, due to the volume of them out there and the sloppy, rushed signatures with which they were generally beholden. Additionally, the book itself was a totally underwhelming read. Those interested in adding Shepard memorabilia to their collection could do much better in the $200-$300 price range.

This is just one man's opinion, but as an investment I wouldn't consider a standard signed "Moon Shot" much of one. You may be able to sell it to collectors looking for a Shepard signature on the cheap, but outside of that I don't see the allure of one at all.

I would put the Shepard at $100 or less even if it is a nice signature and not one of the rushed AShepard ones. I recently bought one for $65. It is inscribed but it is a great signature. Also was signed by Walt Cunningham and Gordon Cooper.

Is it odd that I'd prefer to have the rushed signature to the full one?

I find it more aesthetically pleasing.

I believe the Easton Press signed edition of "Moon Shot" has some value. The signature on the ones I have seen is carefully put down, and on most copies the Easton Press COA is also signed by Shepard.

The Easton Press COA is *always* a reproduction of the original, albeit a good one. Fools lots of people.

As for the value of these astronaut-signed books, my own feeling is that a nice First Edition/First Printing with a solid signature will always be both desirable and valuable. Most copies are not first printings (and therefore, not the "true firsts" sought by bibliophiles).

Based on recent sale prices, I'd say a 1st/1st "Moon Shot" (full signature, uninscribed) would fetch ~$125-$150, while an Irwin same state would be ~$90-$100. Neither is easy to find as an uninscribed 1st/1st.

All times are CT (US)
